Deconstruction of the legend – Smack My Bitch Up rewound

Growing up in the 90’s I was an avid fan of The Prodigy. They were gods to me because the music that they were creating seemed very different from anything that was around at the time. It really was all about the sampling of old stuff, but then so much more. There were many bands at the time, especially in the hip-hop industry, that were practicing music sampling(well, it all really started with the Chamberlin in the 1940s), but none of them could quite compare to the degree of complexity that The Prodigy achieved. Their music, while triggering some familiarity in ones mind, was metamorphosed to such a degree from its sources, that trying to figure out what samples it was build out of was nearly impossible. The result wasn’t seen as an assembly of parts any longer. it felt completely new.

Today, almost 13 years later, I was pleasantly surprised to discover this amazing video. In front of you is Jim Pavloff, who with the help of  Ableton Live is unavailing the magic behind The Prodigy‘s work, by recomposing all of the sample used in the 1997’s track Smack My Bitch Up. Seeing this song in a deconstructed form, not only doesn’t take the magic away from Prodigy’s work, but rather shows the extent of complexity to which Liam Howlett was able to go. After all there was nothing even remotely as advanced as Ableton software at the time of the songs inception.

I’d like to state that I have immense respect for Jim for delivering us, what seems like a product of an extensive research and work.

Enjoy!
